The latest point release of Debian 12 “Bookworm” brings together hundreds of fixes and security patches while maintaining the core integrity of the operating system.
The Debian Project has officially released Debian 12.11, marking the eleventh point release of the current stable distribution, codenamed Bookworm. While not a new version in itself, this update consolidates all bug fixes and security updates published since the release of Debian 12.10. It reinforces Debian’s reputation as one of the most robust and reliable operating systems, especially in professional and server environments.
As is customary with point releases, users who already have Debian 12 installed and regularly updated do not need to take any action. However, those who intend to perform a fresh installation are now encouraged to use the new ISO images, which include all the latest patches to reduce post-installation download volume.
What’s New in Debian 12.11?
The core of the system remains the same as when Debian 12 launched in 2023. It continues to feature key components such as Linux kernel 6.1 LTS, systemd 252, GNOME 43, KDE Plasma 5.27, Mesa 22.3, and other popular desktop environments like Xfce 4.18, MATE 1.26, LXQt 1.2.0, and Cinnamon 5.6.8.
This release focuses on minor version upgrades and critical security patches to ensure continued stability and security.
Highlights from Debian 12.11:
- Updates to critical packages such as bash, OpenSSL, NGINX, OpenSSH, Docker, ImageMagick, PostgreSQL, and Python.
- Fixes for multiple CVE-registered vulnerabilities, including issues in HAProxy, glib2.0, libbson, Redis, krb5, Poppler, and phpMyAdmin.
- Removal of obsolete packages such as pidgin-skype and viagee, due to discontinued upstream services.
- Early preparation for Debian 13 “Trixie”, with signing keys included in the
debian-archive-keyring
package. - A known issue with the current kernel version (6.1.137-1) affecting module loading for watchdog and w83977f_wdt on amd64 systems. A fix is already in progress.
Who Should Download Debian 12.11?
Debian 12.11 is primarily intended for new installations. If you are already running Debian 12 and have been keeping your system up to date via the standard repositories, you are already benefiting from most of the changes in this point release.
If you’re setting up a fresh system, using the updated installation media is recommended to avoid downloading large updates afterward.
