A sovereign, secure, and self-hosted solution for organizations seeking digital independence and regulatory compliance
In today’s digital landscape, email remains a critical communication channel for businesses. As regulatory pressure and data sovereignty concerns rise, the need for robust and reliable email archiving solutions has never been greater. Enter Open Archiver — a new open-source platform designed to help organizations archive, store, index, and search email data across major providers like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, and standard IMAP servers, while maintaining full control over their infrastructure.
Developed by LogicLabs OU, Open Archiver empowers IT teams to build a tamper-proof, vendor-neutral, and cost-effective system for storing their communication history—fully under their own terms.
Designed for resilience and compliance
Open Archiver offers a modern, flexible feature set that includes:
- Universal Email Ingestion: Import and synchronize email accounts from Google, Microsoft, or any IMAP-compatible provider, in bulk and in real time.
- Secure & Efficient Storage: Emails are stored in standard
.eml
format, deduplicated, compressed, and encrypted at rest to reduce costs and protect data. - Pluggable Storage Backends: Supports local filesystem storage and S3-compatible object storage (e.g., AWS S3, MinIO).
- Full-Text Search and eDiscovery: A lightning-fast search engine (Meilisearch) indexes all emails and attachments (PDF, DOCX, etc.).
- Retention & Legal Hold Policies: Define precise retention rules and place legal holds to ensure data is preserved during litigation (planned feature).
- Immutable Audit Trails: Logs every action in the system, ensuring traceability and compliance (also planned for future releases).

Built on a modern tech stack
The platform leverages a contemporary architecture:
- Frontend: Built with SvelteKit (Svelte 5)
- Backend: Node.js, Express.js and TypeScript
- Database: PostgreSQL for metadata and audit logs
- Job Queue: BullMQ powered by Redis (or Valkey)
- Search Engine: Meilisearch for blazing-fast performance
- Deployment: Docker Compose for simple, reproducible setup
With just a few commands, users can deploy the entire stack in minutes. Only 4 GB of RAM is required to get started — or 2 GB if external services are used.
Why it matters: Digital sovereignty and full control
In an era of growing concerns about extraterritorial laws like the CLOUD Act and increasing scrutiny over data residency, Open Archiver gives organizations a self-hosted alternative to cloud email archiving solutions. It ensures sensitive data stays within controlled environments and complies with local legal frameworks.
This makes it especially relevant for public administrations, healthcare providers, legal firms, and financial institutions — sectors where data sovereignty and compliance are non-negotiable.
Being fully open source, Open Archiver also avoids vendor lock-in and encourages transparency and innovation. A public live demo is available at:

Open call to the community
LogicLabs has committed to building an open and collaborative ecosystem around the project, offering real-time support via Discord and encouraging contributions of all kinds—from bug fixes to feature development.
In a market dominated by proprietary black boxes, Open Archiver stands out as a transparent, auditable, and scalable platform for the long haul. For organizations ready to take back control of their email data, this could be the open-source breakthrough they’ve been waiting for.
